Flamenco XXI: Opera, Coffee and Cigar

Looking into the roots to seek modernity.

Some poems by Bécquer or even the popular folk songs adapted by the musicologist Felipe Pedrell and belonging to the Silverio Franconetti's repertoire may well be the starting point for moving towards divergent directions.

The search for information is the chosen route for this show; information gathered from the 19th and 20th century press, from sound archives left by past flamenco artists, and from multimedia resources where the foundations of dancing can be admired. All these are the source of our inspiration and solid reference.

In order to create a modern aesthetic from the period we homage, we use ilustrations of artists such as Gustavo Doré, Picabia, García Ramos; the drawings of Escudero; or old photographs from Lamparilla, Antonia Mercé, La Malena, La Macarrona or Encarnación and Pilar López among many others. We search deep down not to do things as they were done then, but to use the knowledge in order to learn from it and to recreate the viewpoint we have today in the 21st century.

The aim of this sequence of coreographic images is to homage the period, foregrounding our respect to the great dancing, singing and guitar artists for their work in building the foundations for our artistic expression, as we know it today.
